Waste Management & Wealth from Waste

India is among the most water-stressed regions in the world, and 600 million Indians are facing high-to-extreme water stress (NITI Aayog Report-2018). India is currently ranked 120 among 122countries in the water quality index. The report warns that by 2030 water demand could be twice the existing supply which could lead to severe water scarcity for millions of Indians. It is worth mentioning here that pollutant discharge from industrial effluent is one of the major contributors of water contamination. To deal with environmental concerns and the emerging pollution menace, the S&T cluster will work on a national mission subjected to waste management and wealth from waste. Waste management is the process and actions required to manage waste from inception to its final disposal. The projects will focus on addressing issues related to waste collection, treatment and Disposal and monitoring the waste management process. The cluster will also utilise regional expertise to take measures to generate wealth from waste by scientific-technological processing. The cluster will act as a common platform for technology providers, local bodies, government stakeholders and users to seek relevant solutions to waste management and generate wealth out of the waste. The institutes in the region are actively involved in research and development activities related to biomass management, treatment of agriculture waste, wastewater reutilization, industrial effluent treatment, and many more. The key institutes mentioned above are PU, Chd.; PAU, Ludhiana; IIT-Ropar, IHBT-Palampur, DBT-CIAB. Mohali, MDU, and Haryana; Shoolini University, Solan etc.
